Apartment Decorating- Mid Century Modern

What is Mid Century Modern?

Neutral to bold colors, clean lines, minimal and functional. You can draw inspiration for this style from the mid 1930’s to the 1960’s. There are so many pieces I am attracted to that my grandparents used to have in their home and still do. Specifically some of the dining chairs that I included in today’s post.

I started to fall in love with this style when we visited Palm Springs last year. There is mid century architecture wherever you go. Particularly when we had drinks at the Parker in Palm Springs, I was obsessed with the decor designed by Jonathan Adler.

I have been doing a lot of research over the last couple of months to see if that Mid Century modern style would fit into my lifestyle. I love everything that Joanna Gaines does “Farmhouse Modern”, but i’m not really sure if it fits with the feel of our place. Neutrals and comfort are basically my go to’s. I guess what I am drawn to in clothes is also kind of what I am drawn to with interior furniture! Rhys and I are both into the mid century modern style, which is a plus that we don’t have crazy different styles!

This is the first time that i’ve been able to furnish a whole room. Previously living with other roommates they already had certain pieces of furniture so everything was just kind of mix and matched. It’s fun/ expensive to start fresh!

A sectional would be ideal because Rhys and I both like to lounge on the couch. Unfortunately, we are unsure if we are going to have enough room. If we do get a sectional it would have to be on the smaller side with a chaise lounge. We strolled around Lincoln Park yesterday bopping in and out of furniture stores. You can find a lot of interior stores in the Ranch Triangle which is located along North Ave and Clybourn. Now its just time to hit the checkout button!

We are challenged with a couple things when looking for the perfect sofa. We have narrowed down the store we want to buy a sofa from, but we have a small space to work with, a quick turn around time and Rhys has a dislike for certain textures. All of this makes our options fairly limited. Most of the pieces that I have found that I like are from West Elm, Wayfair, Joss and Main, All Modern, World Market and Target.

  2. I love mid century modern! My house is an Italianate style home though so it doesn’t really fit the look. But I can live vicariously through you!
