History of Fashion

Happy FURiday! It has been a long and cold week here in Chicago, but Stacy and I are staying warm in our pretty fur stoles! I remember when I was younger my Yia-Yia (Grandma in Greek) coming to every party in her luxurious floor-length mink coat. I always thought she looked so beautiful and regal. She still owns that coat and wears it’s every now and then, but it is really heavy! She passed down so many beautiful fur, faux fur coats, and fur stoles. She actually just gave me this beautiful vintage sweater that my Papou (Grandpa in Greek) bought her when they first started dating. The sweater is a cream button down and has a fur stole attached on the neckline. The piece is really delicate so I have been afraid to wear it, but it’s something that I am going to cherish forever and hopefully pass down to my children or grandchildren.

In design school one of my favorite classes was about the history of Fashion. While writing this post I wanted to refresh my memory on the evolution of fur. Just a little background on when Fur stoles started becoming popular. In 1917 Paul Poiret among other designers like Jeanne Lanvin, Patou, Gabrielle Chanel, Pierre Cardin and others introduced fur stoles in their collections. These elegant pieces remained a stylish item throughout the 20th century and now we are seeing them emerge again in the 21st century. There are so many different types of fur: Beaver, wolf, marten, minx, and lynx. Fur was used for fine coats for women, hats for men and the trim of coats for working men. Fur was the most popular in the 1960’s and was typically worn by the elite. If you are looking for more animal friendly pieces and would rather opt for faux there were so many options available this season! We found some great steals on these faux fur stoles at Asos and Forever 21 for under $50! Faux fur was invented in 1929 but didn’t become commercially used until the 1950’s and has become increasingly popular among fashion designers. With the technology we have today it gives the faux very similar qualities and textures as real fur.
